The paper “Channel Estimation for Flexible Intelligent Metasurface Aided MIMO Communications” received the Best Paper Award in the Telecommunications category at the XLIV Brazilian Symposium on Telecommunications and Signal Processing (SBrT 2026), held in Salvador, Bahia.
The first author, Vinícius Lopes Romano, is an undergraduate student in Telecommunications Engineering at UFC, a researcher at the Applied Signal Processing Laboratory (LASP), and an Undergraduate Research Fellow at INCT-Signals, co-advised by Prof. André L. F. de Almeida, coordinator of LASP and INCT-Signals. The paper is also co-authored by Prof. Daniel Araújo from the University of Brasília (UnB), a collaborator at LASP.
📡 The research investigates channel estimation in MIMO systems aided by Flexible Intelligent Metasurfaces (FIMs), an emerging technology for next-generation wireless communications. The study integrates frontier topics in signal processing, MIMO communications, and programmable intelligent surfaces, which are core research areas developed at LASP and within the scope of INCT-Signals.
This award highlights the high quality of research conducted at LASP and INCT-Signals and underscores the importance of undergraduate research programs in training new researchers, offering undergraduate students the early opportunity to work on cutting-edge, high-impact scientific problems.
